How Many Different Types of Bed Bugs Are There?
While there are many different types of bed bugs, there are only around three that you are likely to encounter in your home. These three types are:
- Cimex himpterus
- Cimex lectularius
- Leptocimex boueti
These three types of bed bugs are the only ones that are known to feed on humans. Of these three, the most common species is Cimex lectularius (C. lectularius) and can be found worldwide. C. himpterus is generally found in tropical regions, and L. boueti is only found in South America and western Africa.
When identifying bed bugs, look for:
- Small size, up to ¼†or 7mm at most
- Flat, oval shape – they may appear more rounded if they have recently fed
- Reddish-brown color – they may appear darker if they have recently fed
- A musty, sweet smell that permeates the room
In the Colorado Front Range area, you are most likely to encounter the most common type of bed bug, C. lectularius. However, if you have been traveling internationally, you may encounter different types of bed bugs. Regardless of what kind of bed bug you have, you want them removed as quickly as possible.
Eradicating Bed Bugs
Did you know that post-WWII, bed bugs were nearly eradicated in the US? However, with the increase in global travel and the ban on DDT, bed bugs have had a resurgence, and they are now more common than ever. These pests are incredibly tenacious, adept at hiding, and can live for long periods without feeding. This makes them very difficult to get rid of once they have a foothold in your home. The first step to dealing with bed bugs is to correctly identify them.
Bed bugs are part of the Cimicidae insect family. This family of blood-sucking insect feeds on humans and other mammals. Bed bugs are the only member of this family that has adapted to feed exclusively on humans, specifically theC. lectularius species. Though some of these other insects can and do bite humans, people are not their preferred hosts.
The other insets in the Cimicidae family that are common in Colorado, and which are often mistaken for bed bugs include:
- Bat bugs – next to bed bugs, this is the most common member of the Cimicidae family in Colorado
- Hesperocimex coloradensis – attach to purple martins, woodpeckers, and owls as hosts
- Poultry bug – nocturnal and most often found where chickens and other poultry roost
- Swallow bug – most often associated with cliff swallows, though have been found with barn swallows
